چکیده

552 British Journal of General Practice, October 2015 IntroduCtIon Adult gonococcal conjunctivitis is a relatively rare disease in the UK. It ‘typically’ presents in young adult men who have sex with men, and usually is preceded by a symptomatic urethritis.1 Examination shows unior bilateral conjunctival injection, chemosis, subconjunctival haemorrhages, and copious mucopurulent discharge. If there is corneal involvement, there may be associated epithelial defects and stromal infiltrates, which, if left untreated, can rapidly lead to corneal perforation. It is easily treated and therefore a diagnosis not to be missed.2 Case hIstory A discharging red eye is a common presentation to general practice, and is often diagnosed and treated as bacterial conjunctivitis.3 We were referred a 76-yearold male patient with severe bilateral conjunctivitis, unresponsive to treatment with topical chloramphenicol and fusidic acid.4 He developed photophobia and reduced visual acuity to 6/18 in both eyes from 6/9 1 year previously. Slit-lamp examination demonstrated bilateral intense conjunctival injection, chemosis, diffuse conjunctival vessel dilatation, with small

When should adenoviral non-gonococcal urethritis be suspected? Two case reports.

The impact of Adenovirus as agent of non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) is still poorly documented in the literature. We describe two cases showing that adenoviral infection should be reasonably hypothesized in men with dysuria and scant urethral discharge in addition to meatus inflammation and/or edema (meatitis) or conjunctivitis. Case 1: a 55-year-old man came to our observation in July 2012 re...

Conjunctival Pockets.

SYMBLEPHARON is described by all authors discussing conjunctival diseases as adhesion between the palpebral and bulbar conjunctivae. Its aetiology is described as purulent conjunctivitis, diphtheritic conjunctivitis, trachoma, trauma, and so on. These factors do not always cause symblepharon, but may result in a very troublesome condition, apparently not mentioned in the literature, viz. conjun...

Meningococcal Neonatal Purulent Conjunctivitis/Sepsis and Asymptomatic Carriage of N. meningitidis in Mother's Vagina and Both Parents' Nasopharynx

Neonatal conjunctivitis is usually associated with vagina's infection by Chlamydia sp., N. gonorrhoeae, and/or other bacteria during delivery. Meningococcal neonatal conjunctivitis is an extremely rare disease. We report a case of neonatal meningococcal sepsis/conjunctivitis and asymptomatic carriage of N. meningitidis from both parents (vagina and nasopharynx). As part of our active surveillan...
